Compared to playing catch

The sender throws the ball - in a way the receiver can catch it.

  • The sender is always responsible for the ball and all aspects of the throw.

  • The sender is also responsible to correct the throw

The receiver catches the ball - by focusing on it

  • The receiver is responsible for doing their very best to catch the ball

  • The receiver is also responsible for providing feedback about the throw, the ball, or some impediment to the catch

Communication

Actual Communication is fairly basic.

  1. The Sender is responsible for the message.

    • Its content

    • Its delivery

    • Its accuracy

  2. The Receiver is responsible for receiving and feedback

    • What was received

    • Impediments to reception

    • Additional attempts to receive

  3. Miscommunication happens when:

    • The sender thinks the message is the receiver's responsibility

    • When the receiver doesn't prioritize receiving and feedback

Both the sender and receiver must actively listen

Active Listening
Active listening is a communication skill that involves paying close attention to what someone is saying, understanding it, and responding appropriately. It requires a significant amount of concentration and effort, and involves both verbal and non-verbal techniques to demonstrate focus on the speaker.
